GRK1896 Winterschool in Grossarl

26.02-01.03.2018

This year's GRK school took place from the 26th of February to the 1st of March in Grossarl (Austria). It featured various new aspects as compared to former schools: Besides being a non-PI school, it took place, for the first time, in winter. In addition, a new format of talks, namely methodological tutorials given by experienced GRK students for all participants, was successfully introduced. All talks were accompanied by lively and fruitful discussions leading to new ideas and being seeds for further cooperations between different GRK projects. A pleasant atmosphere was created by a well-balanced scientific to social program ratio. The latter included e.g. skiing, sledging and winter hikes.

Inauguration of the new Xradia 810 Ultra X-ray Microscope

The inauguration of our new x-ray microscope will take place on the 10th of November starting at 10:00. International Congress Engineering of Advanced Materials

10. - 12. October 2017

The aim of the International Congress Engineering of Advanced Materials (ICEAM) 2017 is to place 10 years of interdisciplinary research at the Cluster of Excellence Engineering of Advanced Materials (EAM) in the international context of state-of-the-art science and engineering research. Our target audience is local, national and international researchers working in fields where EAM is active. With a mix of invited plenary, keynote and submitted talks and posters, the congress will focus on EAM’s four application fields, Nanoelectronic Materials, Photonic and Optical Materials, Catalytic Materials and Lightweight Materials. Furthermore, the key role played by our cross-sectional topics, Functional Particle Systems, Nanoanalysis & Microscopy and Multiscale Modeling & Simulation will be apparent throughout the congress.

The 8th EAM Symposium is hosted by the Cluster of Excellence – Engineering of Advanced Materials on November 21 - 23, 2016 at Kloster Banz, Bad Staffelstein. This year’s symposium will show new aspects of the EAM research and introduce new scientists to the EAM community.

3rd GRK Summer School 2016

12. - 14. October 2016

The annual Summer School of the Research Training Group 1896 for in situ microscopy will take place from the 12th to the 14th of October. During the Summer School the students will provide an overview of their research. Additionally, several internationally renowned guests will be invited to give insights into their work related to in situ microscopy.

1st Erlangen Atom Probe Tomography School

September 12 - 15, 2016

This 4 day intensive course will provide an introduction to high field physics, atom probe instrumentation, sample preparation and data interpretation to the novice and intermediate level atom prober. As an outcome, the participants will be able to independently perform atom probe experiments, reconstruct their data and carry out in-depth analysis of a variety of different problem sets. A full day FIB - lift-out tutorial is included.

2nd CENEM Summer School for X-ray Scattering

18.-21. July 2016

The 2nd CENEM Summer School for X-ray Scattering will be held at the chair for crystallography and structural physics from 18th to 21st of July 2016. This school will provide a perfect opportunity to get a detailed insight into theory and practice of several modern scattering methods as e.g. powder diffraction, small angle X-ray scattering, surface scattering using a grazing incident X-ray beam, and reflectometry. This includes lessons about the basic principles of scattering of X-rays, methodological background of the diverse methods, but also data reduction and data evaluation. Half of the time will be devoted to hands-on training and demonstration experiments at several of our state-of-the-art laboratory instruments.

"Small Structures - Big Impact" - An exhibition at the botanical garden Erlangen

The cluster of excellence 'Engineering of Advanced Materials' will host an exhibition at the botanical garden Erlangen with the title 'Small Structures - Big Impact'. The poster display will feature microscopic images of plants and animals that show how structures on the micro- and nanoscale can make for big effects such as the the color of a butterfly. POWTECH is one of the world's leading trade fairs with regards to analyzing, handling and processing of powders, granulates and bulk solids. The cluster of excellence (EAM) together with CENEM, the Institute of Particle Technology (LFG), the CRC 814 Additive Manufacturing, the Institute of Engineering Thermodynamics (LTT) and the Institute of Chemical Reaction (CRT) will host a joint stand at the exhibition, showcasing the combined research expertise. GRK 1896 Symposium at the DPG spring meeting 2016 in Regensburg

The symposium "In-situ Microscopy with Electrons, X-Rays and Scanning Probes in Materials Science" will present recent progress in the field of in situ microscopy in several invited talks by leading experts and aims at bringing together specialists from the three pillars of nano-characterization and the entire materials spectrum. Special emphasis will be given to the use of complementary techniques and the combination of experimental approaches and modeling. The symposium is co-organized by the research training group GRK 1896, which will present several highlights of its research.

50 Years of Materials Research in Erlangen at the Institute I

The Institute I of the Department for Materials Science & Engineering was officially established on August 9th 1965 by late Prof. Bernhard Ilschner. Since then 50 years passed and more than 600 students have received their Diploma, Bachelor’s, Master’s or Doctoral degrees at the Institute.
The Institute I celebrates its 50th anniversary with an International Symposium on Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Advances Metallic Materials.

Long Night of Science

For already the 7th time the 'Long Night of Science' invites us on a spectacular journey through the world of science.
On Saturday the 24th of October a large number of exhibits throughout Erlangen, Nuremberg and Fürth are open to visitors from 18:00 to 1:00 o'Clock.
CENEM is proud to participate in this event with an exhibition at the electron microscopy facilities. Visitors will not only be able to see one of the most advanced electron microscopes in the world but also learn about how it helps us to understand a self-cooling beer keg. After the presentation you will have the chance to get a fresh cold beer from such a high-tech keg, which is kindly provided by Tucher.

International Symposium on Current Challenges in Structural Physics on the occasion of the retirement of Prof. Dr. Andreas Magerl

5th Erlangen TEM School

23. – 26. March 2015

This year young researchers interested in transmission electron microscopy (TEM) are again invited to participate in the Erlangen TEM school from 23rd - 26th March 2015, organized by Prof. Erdmann Spiecker and his team at the Center for Nanoanalyis and Electron Microscopy (CENEM) of the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg. The school offers an excellent opportunity to become familiar with the theory and application of different electron microscopy techniques: electron microscopy sample preparation (conventional and FIB), electron diffraction, conventional TEM, high-resolution and analytical TEM. CENEM is equipped with CM30, CM300 and double-corrected Titan Themis³ TEMs as well as Dual-Beam FIB Helios NanoLab660. We intend to initiate discussions regarding the possibility of applying these techniques in the research projects of the participants. The participants are therefore requested to complement their application with an abstract of about 150 words highlighting their research interests in the context of electron microscopy. Daily program of the TEM School typically comprises a lecture on the theory and application of TEM methods followed by practical sessions in the sample preparation and TEM laboratories of the CENEM. Therefore the number of participants is limited to 15 researchers.

Erlangen TEM School

The Erlangen TEM-School 2013 takes place November 11th - 14th at the Center for Nanoanalysis and Electron Microscopy. 16 national and international participants have the opportunity to learn about conventional and advanced transmission electron microscopy in theoretical and practical sessions.

GRK 1896 kick-off meeting

The new research training group "In situ microscopy with electrons, X-rays and scanning probes" will be kicked off with a symposium on the 7th of November. Through the course of the whole day there will be scientific talks given by the students outlining the course of their project.

CENEM Workshop: Neutrons for Functional Materials

18. – 19. June 2013

Neutrons are a perfect probe for the study of structure and dynamics of condensed matter. The extremely wide range of its applications is due to its unique properties (e.g. zero charge, magnetic moment, isotope dependent scattering). Thus with neutrons the microscopic structure of matter can be determined in space and time non-destructively with atomic resolution. The aim of the two-day workshop on 18th and 19th of June in Erlangen was to bring together experts for neutron research of the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Zentrum (MLZ) and researchers of the Cluster of Excellence “Engineering of Advanced Materials” (EAM) as well as researchers of CENEM for extensive exchange and discussion.
